Hailing from a family of wine producers, Mateus crafts wines across various regions of Portugal under different labels, all dedicated to organic viticulture. Embracing biodynamic practices in many vineyards, the wines are fermented naturally and bottled with minimal additives, only a tiny amount of sulfites. The term Claret, with its various spellings, refers to a light red or deep rosé wine style that gained popularity in England centuries ago, sourced from Bordeaux vineyards. While Bordeaux holds the monopoly on the name Claret, similar styles have historical roots in Iberia and Italy. This medium-bodied wine exhibits an inky hue with notes of purple fruits, a vibrant aroma of plum, cassis, caraway, rhubarb, and eucalyptus. It is easy, approachable, and absolutely delicious.
