It is the Alsatian grape variety par excellence. Everyone agrees that the Rhine Valley is its cradle. Its culture dates back to Roman times.
This variety quickly took the name of Riesling, a name that comes from riesen (which means to flow in German) because before it became acclimatized to the Alsatian climate, it was very sensitive to coulure (indeed, if the climatic conditions are bad, such as rain during flowering, the flowers fall).
Somewhat different from its German cousin, Riesling from Alsace was established in our region from the end of the 15th century.
It is frequently cited during the following centuries but it will be necessary to wait until the second half of the 19th century for its culture to develop. It was in the 1960s that it reached the forefront of production areas in Alsace. Today it represents nearly 22% of the area planted in Alsace.
Tasting
A brilliant straw yellow color with golden reflections. A flattering nose with toasted notes mixed with mineral notes. On the palate, this Riesling is lively and drinkable, it has a good balance and a long persistence.
Food and wine pairings
Riesling d'Alsace is a wine of gastronomy par excellence, beyond the pairings that we know it naturally with Alsatian cuisine (such as sauerkraut or smoked pork shoulder…).
It is also excellent with fish, shellfish and also shellfish (such as scallops or oysters). It gracefully highlights the iodized flavors of seafood.
